‘After scouring the world for the scattered Maltese riders this world possesses, WelchAllyn is proud to join the ranks of the global cycling community! As the only Maltese team we take it upon ourselves, with the aid of our young trainee Orlando Axisa, to make a capable team that’s able to race on the World Tour.’ - This written statement left the mansion of Freddy de Vettige earlier today.
The past few months were quite an experience for the WelchAllyn community, as their riders managed to snag points here and there, securing them a place in the second division for the very first time. 1500 OCM points were gathered for a while, and Kristiaan Paaps was able to participate on the cobble classic in Minsk, securing a noteworthy 4th place, a true hallmark for the team.
While the second division proved to show the growing pains of the team, as results dwindled for a while, it did however rekindle the flame for improvement for WelchAllyn.
Big restructurings seem to have been undertaken by Freddy and the core riders, as a few noteworthy retirements were announced, where Arras Kerim and the very first trained rider of the team, Francis Nilis, decided to take up senior positions in the management of the team.
Also, the focus of the team seems to have shifted into securing more young cobble talents to futureproof the team, with special mentions to Serafin Matutes and Stasys Gvildys. The first already proving to be able to score points on the Cobbles of Astana.
Lastly, the war chest of the former Belgian, now Maltese team, has been increasing for a while, talks in Valletta city note to OCM O9 bikes to be spotted on the hilly pavements of the sunny capital of the island nation.
